Cursó estudios en el colegio de los jesuitas de La Flèche y obtuvo su licenciatura en Derecho en la Universidad de Poitiers. Entre sus obras, se cuentan, además de las Meditaciones, las Reglas para la dirección del espíritu, el Discurso del método, los Principios de la filosofía, el Tratado de las pasiones, así como abundante correspondencia.
