Autor

(Miromesnil, 1850 - París, 1893). Escritor francés perteneciente a una familia de pequeños aristócratas librepensadores.

Pronto abandonó su formación para dedicarse a la literatura, por consejo de su gran maestro y amigo Gustave Flaubert, quien lo introdujo en el círculo de escritores de la época, entre ellos Émile Zola, Iván Turgueniev, Edmond Goncourt y Henry James. Su primer éxito fue el célebre cuento «Bola de sebo». Son especialmente destacables sus cuentos de terror, género en el que es reconocido como un maestro a la altura de Edgar Allan Poe. 

Afectado durante toda su vida de graves trastornos nerviosos, en 1892, tras un intento de suicidio en Cannes, fue ingresado en el manicomio de París, donde murió dieciocho meses después.
