Complete and unabridged, with 60 full-page plates by Marguerite Gérard, Louis-Léopold Boilly and Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot. A mother ruins one son by adoring him and makes the other by neglect - a painter and a soldier of Napoleon's army. Balzac's clearest study of what favoritism does to a family. This edition adds Katharine Prescott Wormeley's translation and a gallery of 60 plates, among them paintings by Daumier, Gavarni, Suvée and Fragonard.
