Monthly essays written for the Cornhill while Thackeray was editing it - on his own vanity, on money, on being read in America, on growing old. He talks to the reader here more directly than anywhere in the novels. This edition is bound with a gallery of 60 plates of painting, among them works by John Jackson, John Robertson Reid and Patrick Allan Fraser, and includes Part I, Part II and Part III.
