A blind boy of a rich family and the ugly orphan girl who leads him about the mines of Socartes in the north of Spain, until an operation restores his sight. Galdós wrote the cruellest possible ending and made it inevitable; it is the most read of his short novels. This edition pairs Clara Bell's translation with sixty bound plates of Spanish painting, among them works by Goya, Sorolla and Zuloaga.
