Tarzan, having given up Jane and his title, drifts through Paris and Algiers into the service of a French agent, and is thrown from a liner into the sea. Burroughs sent him back to the jungle by way of the drawing-room, and on the way invented Opar — the sun-worshipping ruin whose priestess La wants him for herself. The book that follows the famous one is where the series decides it is not going to be about civilisation after all.
