Twelve episodes from the years the first novel skipped: Tarzan as a boy among the apes, learning what a lie is, what a god might be, and why the she-ape he grew up beside will never be his. Burroughs went back into his own invention to fill in a childhood, and produced the strangest book of the series — closer to folklore than to adventure. The jungle here is not a stage for fights but a school with very few lessons and no mercy.
