Constance Fenimore Woolson

Autor

Nació en Claremont, Estados Unidos en 1840. Sobrina nieta de James Fenimore Cooper –el autor de El último mohicano– recibió críticas excelentes por sus relatos para las prestigiosas revistas The Atlantic Monthly o Harper’s Magazine. Con casi cuarenta años comenzó a vivir en Europa, y mantuvo una gran amistad (ha llegado incluso a hablarse de romance) con Henry James, a quien conoció en 1880. En medio de una depresión, murió en Venecia, Italia, en 1984, al caerse o tirarse por una ventana. Fue enterrada en el Cementerio Protestante de Roma.

En vida de Fenimore Woolson, fueron muy populares sus llamados «relatos de los Grandes Lagos», incluidos en Castle Nowhere: Lake-Contry Sketches (1875) o Rodman the Keeper: Southern Sketches (1880), aunque posteriormente han alcanzado mayor prestigio su excelente novela Fort he Major (1883) y las narraciones, de diferente extensión, reunidas en The Front Yard and Other Italian Stories y Dorothy and Other Italian Stories, que aparecieron ya póstumamente, en 1895 y 1896 respectivamente.
